Get Rid Of Basement Mold

September 10, 2010

Basements are notorious for becoming water damaged. Water damage can be a serious issue if not handled right away. Water damaged ceiling tiles, carpets and walls make an ideal environment for mold growth. Mold can be very hazardous to a person’s health. The mold must be cleaned and completely removed to prevent any illnesses.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Safety First

Before any mold removal takes place, a person must ensure their safety. Wearing a face mask, goggles and in some cases disposable shoe covers can help protect a person. Open any windows or doors to allow ventilation into the basement. Children, elderly and those with breathing problems should not enter a basement that has a mold problem.

Things You’ll Need:
  • - Safety Goggles
  • - Rubber Gloves
  • - Rubber Boots
  • - Face Mask
  • - Hot Water
  • - Bucket
  • - 1 Cup Bleach
  • - Broom
  • - Mop
  • - 1 Cup Borax
  • - Fan

Step 2: Remove and Examine

Remove anything that has been damaged by the water. Carpets and the padding should be pulled up and thrown out. Drywall that is wet will need to be removed as well. In most cases, only the bottom portion of the drywall will need to be cut off. Examine the studs behind the drywall and check for any moisture. Studs that have been compromised should be reinforced with new studs. Check ceiling tiles and remove any that appear wet.

Step 3: Clean With Bleach

Any visible mold should be cleaned with a bleach solution. 1 cup of household bleach to a gallon of water is more than sufficient. It is important to wear rubber gloves to protect the hands from the harsh chemical. Use a brush or broom to clean the cement floors with the bleach solution. A scrubbing brush can be used on the walls and ceiling to remove the mold as well.

Step 4: Use A Fan

Keep a fan on in the basement to keep the air moving and as dry as possible. Once the area is clean and free of mold, the carpet, drywall and ceiling tiles can be replaced.

Step 5: Ventilate

To prevent further mold growth, the area must have plenty of ventilation. If the basement is prone to dampness, it may be a good idea to keep some kind of fan running or install an adequate ventilation system. If the basement is solely used for storage purposes, keep it nice and cool. A cool environment will also help prevent mold growth.

Tips & Warnings

Fix any leaking pipes or cracks in the foundation immediately. This can help reduce the moisture level and further reduce the risk of mold growing. Water damage should be cleaned up within 48 hours when possible, to try and control the risk of mold growing.
